So, a few days ago Papa Smurf handed me an old camera that he'd purchased in Japan back in 1970 before coming back from Vietnam. It was a Yashika Electro 35, and he had the case & extra lenses for it. He asked me to call National Camera Exchange and see what it was worth. -He had said someone at work had told him that they could be worth some decent money because some of the old cameras had brass in them apparently...
Well, I got the answer that I was expecting to hear... No, the camera isn't worth anything, and that the battery that it required is no longer being manufactured! It's a shame apparently, as the camera itself was a lovely piece of engineering. Nothing top-of-the-line, but quite a step above the other cameras in it's price range. Doing a little research on the topic of the battery, I found out that there *IS* a work-around for the lack of a proper battery. It appears that a current 6-volt battery will work perfectly well in the camera, presuming you *ALSO* purchase a simple metal spring, as the new battery isn't as long as the original one was...
The 'new' battery works perfectly in the camera, even though it's voltage is slightly higher... So, if Papa Smurf isn't interested in keeping the camera, I might be interested in toying around with it myself someday...
